Why the IBEW Matters — Then and Now

In the 1890s, electrical work was one of the deadliest jobs in America.  Pay was terrible, hours were endless, and in some places half the linemen died within a few years.  No real training.  No safety rules.  Workers had almost no power.

A small group of them started what became the IBEW.  Over time, they forced major changes:

    •  Made the job dramatically safer
    •  Built a real apprenticeship system so people actually learned the trade
    •  Raised wages, added overtime, benefits, and a pension
    •  Created a way to settle problems without everything turning into a fight

    That foundation still matters today.

Without a union, the company decides almost everything — your pay, your hours, your benefits, and your safety.  History shows what happens when workers have no real leverage: benefits get cut, pay stagnates, hours get longer, and corners get cut on safety.

The IBEW exists to keep that from happening. It forces the company to negotiate instead of just dictating terms.  That’s why the trade went from deadly and low-paid to a skilled career with standards — and why those standards don’t just disappear the second the company wants them gone.
